The “traditional” definition of a traditional tattoo usually deals with black lines, one-third black shading, one-third color, and one-third skin tone. It can also apply to the imagery that is being tattooed on a given person–a lot of military or postcard imagery is used for traditional tattoos and that can sometimes be what defines them, in terms of style.
When you see an American Traditional tattoo, it’s clear as day. The designs are bold, thick, and unique and are often talked about as “sailor” tattoos, as that is how a lot of the designs came to America, from sailors in the 1920s and 1930s.
Keeping this history alive, especially in a historically rich city like Philadelphia, means a lot to us as artists and as a shop. This time-honored style of tattooing isn’t going extinct, but people seem less keen on practicing it and becoming a master at it, compared to some other styles that are more in vogue. We will help make sure American Traditional tattooing never dies and every time you come into Old City Tattoo in Philadelphia, you are helping keep it alive, as well.
